Our trip to hill country

On a fine day, we went to Bandarawela, which is a town in Sri Lankan hillside, because we were invited by my mom’s cousins to stay in one of their houses. On  the way, we stopped to hike at one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka called “Dunhinda Falls”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunhinda_Falls

The trail was about 3 kilometers and it went through the jungle with lots of  birds, squirrels, monkeys and more small creatures. It  was a bit hot but I loved it. 

After we finished that trail, we went to the nine arch bridge, It is a very famous bridge in Sri Lanka.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Arch_Bridge

There was a train track and we saw a train going across. 

After that, we finally arrived at my mother’s cousins house. We all went to a place called Liptons seat but not all the way because the road was too rough. We saw many tea plantations and I picked some of the tea leaves. World famous  Sri Lankan tea comes from this part of the island.

The next day we went to "Nuwaraeliya", also called “Little England” due to its cold misty weather and old English architectural buildings. These buildings where made by English people hundreds of years ago when they were ruling Sri Lanka. 

We went to Gregory lake first then we went to a children’s park. 

We went on a mini train which ran on actual train tracks. We played there for ages. Then we all went to Pizza Hut and ate there. After that, we said our goodbyes and headed back home. 

While we were coming back to Kandy, we saw many waterfalls on the roadside and we went to a Tea Factory where we saw how they produced tea from raw tea leaves. We bought some tea from the tea factory and headed back home. That was the end for that trip.

The wild monkey surprise

One afternoon, I was playing outside when I saw something in the trees. I looked up and saw 2 monkeys. I quickly Called my grandmother and mum. We tried to chase them away but they were not scared because they were town monkeys. 

Then they came into our yard and tried to come near to us. Thankfully my brave dog Hana chased them back to the trees. But they still kept coming in. Finally they went back to trees. That was the end of the story.

My Sri Lankan friend’s birthday

On the 22nd of July, I went to my Sri Lankan friend Dihein’s birthday. It was in the Royal Kandyan Hotel. There was lots of yummy food and fun games. Many of Dihein’s friends were  there. 

His cake theme was Rubic cube theme because he loved playing with them. For the meals, we had a buffet of burgers, Mini sausage pizzas, chocolate eclairs and fish rolls. For the party games we played balloon trains and balloon popping. 

After the party, we got to stay after because the birthday boys mom is one of my mom’s best friends. We went to a barista café and ate chocolate cake. After that, We said goodbye and took a three wheeler back home. 

Few things we did while we were in pilimathalawa and Jambugahapitya (My Grand Parent's Places)

After my dad went back home, we were going to stay in Pilimathalawa for 1 day. 

Then we were going to go to Jambugahapitya and stay there. In that 1 day, we explored the attic in the house. It had not been cleaned in a while and there were rats there. I loved exploring. 

That was for our stay in Pilimathalawa, now we move on to Jambugahapitya. It was a very hot and windy day that time. My grandpa called me to wash my beloved dog named Hana. 

I went to the tap and began to wet him with water. He was shaking his body and spraying everyone with water every minute! Then, we took out his shampoo and put it on him. After a few minutes of lathering the soap, we rinsed him off. Then I took into the sun to dry him.

Visit to Sri Dalada Maligawa (The Temple Of The Tooth)

While I was in Jambugahapitya, I went with my cousins to the temple of the tooth. It is a sacred place for Buddhists because that is where the tooth of lord Buddha is kept.

 We got to light oil lamps and we also got to light incenses.

We got to see the preserved body of Sri Lanka's most famouse tusker. It's name is Raja. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raja_(elephant)

It carried the sacred carrier called "Karaduwa" which symbolizes carrying the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha in our parades (Dalada Perahera) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandy_Esala_Perahera for the most years. It sadly died one day because It was very old and sick.

Family Reunion

One day in my grandma's house, we had a special surprise. All my relatives from my fathers side came to our house. We had a really fun surprise and played with them all day. My friends from the neighboring house came over as well. There were seven kids to play with including me, my brother, my 3 cousins and my next door friends.

For tea with them, us kids got to hand out the cake and Sri Lankan desert which is Kokis. Then we played hide and seek, Hopscotch, jumping bingo and tag. That was the end for that day.

Trip to the Railway Museum and Children’s Park

One day, while we were in Pilimathalawa, we decided to go to the railway museum so we did. We saw many trains and their parts. It was so cool. We got to control the train. Thankfully it was only a replica. We got to switch the tracks.

After that, we went to a children’s park. It was a small one, but it gave us lots of fun. There was a slide, a swing, a seesaw and 2 climbing frames. After a long day filled with fun, we came back home. That was the end for that day.

Our trip to Pasgama

 In the olden days, my dad and auntie used to go to a school in a small village named Marassana, Sri Lanka. We took a trip there to see my dads old house where he used to live when he was a child. He went to that school because his parents were teachers there. 

Just next to his house, there are some stairs leading up to another house where the people who looked after my dad when he was little, lived. There was a path in their yard leading up to their paddy field. We went over there and saw a water stream. We stopped there for a beautiful nature picnic.

🌴These days there is not much water there so people go to the water stream to bath. We touched the water. Then we saw another smaller water stream. No one was bathing there because the water was dirty and there were frogs in it.

After a fun filled day, me, my brother and my dad took the bus to Kandy and then took a pickme taxi back home to Pilimathalawa, because my dad was going to fly back to UAE for work the next day. We were not going, only my dad, because he has to go back to work. We all said our goodbyes and he left for the airport. That was the end for that day. 

Trip to Unawatuna (Downsouth in Sri Lanka)

After staying at my grandparents house for a few days, we took an intercity train journey from Kandy to Colombo to see my mothers best friends.

Colombo Fort ⛫ 

Everyone was rejoiced to see each other in a very long time. We had our breakfast at a food court, it was delicious.

Next, we drove with them for more than 3 hours from Colombo to Galle and went to a holiday villa near Galle in a place called Unawatuna for our three day vacation with them. 

The villa had a pool and a fish pond with a turtle in it. We swam in the pool everyday and I fed the fish there. 

On the first day we went to the beach and went on a glass bottom boat tour. We saw lots of coral and fish and even a sea turtle. We also went body surfing.🌊🌞🌊

On the second day, we went to a forest and went hiking there. There were a lot of leeches .We didn’t like it at all because of that. 2 of them bit me in the leg. It hurt but the experience was fun.

Finally after the last day, we drove back to Colombo. We went to a mall and we had lunch there. Then we said goodbye to my friends and went back to Kandy on the intercity train. 

I will see them again this summer because I got invited to one of their birthdays. His name is Dihein and we are really good friends. The party will be on 22nd of July. I will see him there.

First few things we did in Sri Lanka

My mother's parents [my grandparents] came to pick us up from the airport and drop us off at a town called Pilimathalawa, because that's where my father's parents [my other grandparents] lived. My cousins also lived there and everyone was very happy to see each other. We played about all day. It was very fun.

How my summer vacation started.

On Thursday, my last day of school for year 4 ended. I said bye to all my friends and teachers. Some of them are moving away from SES including 2 of my PE teachers and my friend's family. It is sad that the year ended but I will see everyone next year.

When my school ended I flew to my home country Sri Lanka for my holidays and that's where it all began.

I am Sanuthi. I am 8 years old. I am from Sri Lanka, but currently I live in UAE. I go to SES in UAE and I am in year 5. 

I love reading. I also enjoy doing gymnastics and music, going for a swim, riding my bicycle and of course skating.

I am writing this blog because I want to show the world what I am doing during my summer vacation.
